Robotic Wheelchair Uses Distance Sensor to Follow People

Japan’s Samstag university has developed a wheelchair that is able to follow a person using a camera and a few sensors. The robotic wheelchair is designed to automatically track and follow the person next to them – usually the assistant to the person in the wheelchair. The wheelchair can make its own decisions to either follow single file behind the person when moving through narrow spaces or move side by side with the assistant. Thanks to the distance sensor, the wheelchair can avoid not only stationary obstacles like chairs and desks, but also people.
