Navigation Aid for the Visually Impaired via Smartphone

Japanese researchers have created a realtime positioning system for the blind and visually impaired.  The smartphone app is accurate to within 30 cm and uses pulses of ultra wide band (UWB) transmission technology to communicate with base stations and calculate distances.
