Nanoshell Therapy to Zap Cancer Cells

Nanospectra Biosciences from Houston, Texas is testing the use of nanoparticles in destroying solid tumors. The gold-silica nanoshells, or “optically tunable nano-sized particles,” are sent into the circulatory system and aggregate at a tumor site while bypassing healthy tissue.  Then, the particles can convert light from a laser beam into enough heat to destroy the targeted tumor.
