Magic Carpet Mobility Device

The Magic Carpet device developed by researchers at Polytechnic University allows small children with leg disabilities the experience of moving around independently.  The device can move and spin 360 degrees and is operated by pressing simple buttons, switches or moving a joystick depending on user preference.  The Magic Carpet can support enough weight to carry the child with his/her parent or a stroller and can be operated even when lying down.  Researchers hope to familiarize preschool children with the experience of moving about freely in order to transition into using an electric wheelchair when they reach school age.
