Larry, the vomiting robot has been featured on BBC to help research and analyze the spread of norovirus, the winter vomiting bug. A fairly widespread virus, norovirus is estimated to affect 21 million people each year in the US. Since it is difficult to grow human norovirus in a controlled environment, the robot helps model the spread of the illness. Scientists are able to do this by analyzing what happens when the robot throws up. According to the study, spray from vomit can reach distances of up to 10 feet, allowing researchers to study how the virus can spread.
