New Implant Replaces Impaired Middle Ear

chalmersA new implant from Chalmers University of Technology researchers replaces the middle ear and allows functionally deaf patients to regain hearing. Scientists from Chalmers and Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg have developed the six centimeter long implant to be attached to the skull bone under the skin. This allows the skull bone to transmit the sound vibrations to the user’s inner ear via bone conduction. The new implant no longer requires a titanium screw to anchor on the skull bone.
