Oxford Nanopore Technologies Ltd. has developed a disposable, USB-powered DNA sequencer. The company’s goal is to minimize costs related to genetic analysis and make DNA sequencing more readily available. The device uses a nanopore detection system and can sequence up to 150 million base pairs in six hours. Nanopores are organic molecules with a tiny 1-2 nanometer holes, and are embedded in a polymer membrane. The MinION accepts blood, plasma, and serum for rapid analysis.
