Seventh Sense Biosystems from Massachusetts is developing a painless blood collection device to eliminate the use of needles. The Touch Activated Phlebotomy (TAP) collection platform is said to increase safety and lead to more rapid diagnostic results. The device is able to collect blood from capillaries without contacting a vein. Using micro-needles, the TAP simply penetrates the uppermost layers of skin and can draw up to 100 microliters of blood depending on which size device is used.
