Kinect-based Sign Language Interpreter

Researchers from Microsoft Research Asia and the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have developed a convenient way for sign language users to communicate with others who do not speak the language. With the help of the Microsoft Kinect, the new system can recognize and translate messages spoken in sign language. Users simply stand in front of the camera and speak with their hands. The system then translates the message to the viewer. The system has two modes, the Translation Mode and the Communications Mode. The first mode translates sign language into text or speech and the Communications Mode allows a hearing person and a hard-of-hearing person to converse with ease.
