Magnetically-guided microbots for surgery

A Swiss research team at ETH Zurich has developed the Octomag, a magnetic microbot manipulation system, and the MiniMag, which is a smaller version of the Octomag. Researchers are moving towards clinical trials with the systems and looking towards using the technology for difficult eye surgeries. Both systems are able to control and move a micro-probe in any direction using electromagnets. The systems would minimize the need for extensive surgery since the probe can be injected into the affected area and then controlled remotely to prevent additional incisions.
