Rice University researchers have developed a solar autoclave system to sterilize medical instruments and clean human waste using solar steam. Researchers incorporated special nanoparticles that turn sunlight into heat and steam is created directly from sunlight. The technology can kill microbes as well as spores and viruses. In prior studies, the team discovered the system could kill even the most heat-resistant microbes. Researchers foresee the use of this system in developing nations where access to proper sanitation is not readily available.
