Israel-based company, Regenecure has developed a biopolymer membrane to aid patients with complex fractures. Until now, patients who had experienced severe bone loss which could not be healed with a simple splint have had to rely on the harvesting of bones from other body parts or the use of artificial bone grafts– both of which run a high risk of infection. Regenecure’s membrane, which is similar to a plastic wrapping, can be fitted uniquely for each patient and applied directly to the bone with the use of only one surgery. The biopolymer adheres to the bone, attracting stem cells and allowing new bone to form. As of now, the use of the membrane has been primarily veterinary, but researchers are setting their sights on human trials, beginning with patients who need dental implants.
