MEDIC Offers the Opportunity for Continuous Monitoring of Drug Levels in the Body

While continuous monitoring of everything from heart rate to blood glucose levels has been available for quite some time, the capability to monitor the exact levels of drugs in the body and their effect has been limited. The MEDIC, developed by UC Santa Barbara is able to measure the levels of certain drugs in the blood in relation to a patient’s size, metabolism, food intake and other drugs which they are taking. While the device is still in clinical trials, the developers are hopeful for the future benefits of the MEDIC, including providing patients with a closed loop delivery of drugs, the continuous transmission of drug reactions from patient to doctor, and an overall improvement in the way pharmaceutical drugs are developed.
