Pacemaker Powered by Heartbeats

Pacemaker_0Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are working on a pacemaker that converts the user’s heartbeat into electrical energy. This development would essentially eliminate the need for users to have to undergo surgery every 5 to 8 years for battery replacements. In early studies involving farm animals, the new pacemaker was able to harvest one megawatt of energy from heartbeats; enough to keep the pacemaker running.
